My Little Garden

I’ve shared on here before how much I love gardening. This past weekend One Cute Cowboy started in on one of my front flower beds. It was filled with deep-rooted grass that had completely taken over the bed. I really wish I had a picture of the before, to give you the full affect, because it was pretty bad. But he worked on it several days last week, getting it all dug up.

These pictures don’t do it justice to see just how deep he ended up digging. It looked so strange. Then he took the front-end loader and went out to the pasture and got fresh, new, untouched dirt!

Our nephew, Brycen came over and helped us put down the black mesh to keep grass from coming up again. We put down two layers, then started putting dirt back inside the beds.

OCC got it all leveled out and mixed in a good ratio of sandy-dirt with manure to make the perfect growing grounds for my flowers. Once we were done, I was able to start planting. I love buying and planting flowers. I got these at a nearby greenhouse in Hartley, TX.

They look a little puny now, but they’ll be gorgeous in a month or so. Petunias are One Cute Cowboys favorite so I always try to plant a bunch of those in my front bed and pots around the porch. Also, Petunias do good in our Oklahoma heat and fair well in the wind.

This is a picture of my perennial/shade bed. It comes back stronger every year! I’m hoping  I get  the vegetable garden in this weekend!

Have any of my followers started planting? What are your favorite things to grow?

Happy Saturday!

Early Spring Fever

Flower catalogue with a cup of tea
February isn’t even over yet and I’m already dreaming about what flowers and seeds I’m going to plant this Spring. I spent a good part of yesterday afternoon combing through my Johnny Seeds catalogue seeing what flowers I’d want to try to start from seed his year. Last year I tried to grow a small cut garden and though I grew some pretty Zinnias, I didn’t work very hard at it and it didn’t do as well as it could have. This year I want to do better. I’ve never done much from seed, so this year I’m going to pay close attention to when and how to plant the seed and not just put them in the ground and hope they sprout.

A few that I’m loooking forward to trying are:

Those are just a few! I’ll also plant the actual plants when the time comes, but I’m excited to try some new varieties. Last summer I did this post on some of my flowers around the homestead. I look forward to doing more this year and keeping my fingers crossed that my cherry tree will bloom this year.

What are you planting this year? Have you ever started from seeds? Tell me your experiences and what you’re looking forward to this Spring!
